Heroes: Episode 13 - The Fix

Until I put the forums back up, we’ll discuss it within the main blog. So here a recap of last night’s episode….

Peter chases Claude (introduced last week as having invisibility powers) and demands that they be friends, or at least enter into a mentor/mentee relationship. Claude shrugs Peter off.

In the meantime, Matt sits around reading his wife’s mind as Sylar festers away in his cell, still dead to the world. So does Niki. Hiro and Ando are chased down by a bunch of thugs in a van and they spend the beginning portion of the show hiding under a car.

Once the action picks up, Nathan visits Mohinder, and they’re off in search of Peter. Claire and Zach do some deep-diving into Mr. Bennett’s computer but find nothing. Matt’s really not digging his gift all that much, so he declares to his wife that he’s going to get his revenge on Bennett and the Haitian. And Micah and D.L. are having problems getting along.

Black Oscar Curse

Is there an Oscar curse for African Americans who win an Academy Award? Hattie McDaniels, Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington aside, it seems like the Black Oscar winners have been cursed.

After they win an Oscar, they star in a succession of subpar to shitty films. It’s happened to Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Halle Berry and Jamie Foxx. Jamie did have some success with Dreamgirls, but it was his 4th film after winning an Oscar. And even then, he wasn’t the major star of the film. Halle has yet to rebound as successfully.

In fact, Halle’s best work to date since winning an Oscar has been as an executive producer of Lackawanna Blues. But it isn’t an acting achievement. So is there a Black Oscar curse?

Cancer is determined to wipe out my family. I lost my paternal grandmother, 2 aunts and my father to cancer. 3 weeks ago, we were told that my mother’s oldest living brother was diagnosed with cancer.

He had been losing weight on last year, but we never really thought much about it because he needed to lose weight. He’d been getting a gut the past couple of years, so we were happy that he was losing some weight.

But what we didn’t know was that he was ill. Now here’s the part that I fail to understand. My uncle had a feeling that he was probably sick for months, but never once made an appointment to see a physician. He just kept at his daily activities, not saying a word.

I saw a similar pattern occuring with my father as well. My father was diagnosed with cancer in the late 90’s. He took chemotherapy treatments and it went into remission. But because he thought he was cured, he never went back for preventative measures.

We cannot do this people, especially you men! If you think you’re sick, go and get checked by a physician. Don’t just sit and let the situation get worse. So now my uncle has found out that he has lung cancer.

He was a smoker for years until his baby brother died from complications due to smoking. My uncle quit cold turkey after the death of his brother. He was determined not to let the same thing happen to him, because his baby brother, just like he’s doing now, decided to get a checkup when it was too late.

It is killing my spirit to know that people are waiting until the last minute to worry about their health. My uncle has pretty much decided that he wants to refuse chemotherapy treatments to shrink the tumor. These treatments can possibly prolong his life, but he doesn’t want them.

I don’t understand that way of thinking. Yes, I know he’s ill, but I think he’s being selfish as well because he doesn’t realize how the news of his refusal to fight to live affects not only his immediate family, but our entire family.

So to anyone out there who suspects they may be ill, even if it’s the littlest of things like the common cold, please, please, please don’t hesitate to seek medical attention.

Oh, and by the way, this uncle of mine is Jalen and Tyson’s great-grandfather.

5 Random Facts About Me

I hate being tagged. I almost never reply to those who tag me because my life is an open book. If you surf my blog, you pretty much know all that I want you to know about me. But since Julia tagged me, I figured I’d respond this time. And don’t tag me no damn more, hahaha!

1. I own at least 150+ pair of shoes. Shoes are my weakness. I feel sorry for the man that I marry, because he won’t have much closet space due to my love of shoes.

2. My favorite snack is Dole Pineapple Chunks. Hey, at least they’re nutritious.

3. I once dreamt that I was shot in the back by a shotgun. When I woke up from said dream, my back was in pain. Still have yet to figure that dream out.

4. I think I’m developing a form of OCD. I wash my hands constantly.

5. When I was a kid, I once talked my brother into putting himself inside of the dryer while I turned it on. Don’t worry, he only tumbled for 5 seconds.

Were these random enough for you?

Super Bowl Bound

Yeah, baby! I’m a die hard Colts fan. Moreso because of Tony Dungy. I’ve followed his career for a while now and I’m happy that he and the Colts are going to the Super Bowl. The Patriots have been in thorn in the side of the Colts for a few years and now they get to sit at home.

And although I wanted the Saints to complete their Cinderella story and go to the Super Bowl as well this year, the Bears were just too much for them to handle. But I look at it this way, for the first time in history, two African American coaches are going to the Super Bowl. Gotta love it!
