Daymares

Have you ever taken a nap in the daytime and not been able to get up? You can literally see everything happening around you and even see your own body asleep, but you are fighting to wake up?

It’s as if you are having an out of body experience. You can look down upon your body and your surroundings, but cannot awaken. My mother and brother also have experienced this as well. My mom calls them daymares, like nightmares that occur in the daytime.

I would like to know the correct medical term for this. I’ve heard someone say before that they occur because of poor blood circulation, but I’m not for certain if this is true, because if both my mother and brother have experienced this, then could this be a hereditary trait?

I wonder if it is sleep paralysis. I have been going to the sleep center for sleep apnea and they talk about this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

oh - my - God! Nik. I swear I thought I was the only one that had these! It’s happened at least 4 times in my life and i don’t like it one bit. i literally thought i was dead! and i guess a few times i was trying to talk and my kids said i sounded drunk (i knew i was trying to speak but couldn’t form words). if you find anything out - please holla at cha girl.

Yes! I’ve tried to speak at times when this has happened to me and couldn’t get a word out. It’s scary. I fight so hard to try and wake up, that I’m afraid I may have a heart attack from straining to awake.

Yo Nik… I’ve experienced this many times… it’s like I don’t have enough strength to wake up and when i finally do muster up the strength to wake up, i’m sweating and breathing hard, feeling like i just lifted a boulder or something.

wow. never experienced that before. i hope i never do.

This has happened to me a few times as well. I’m screaming in my head but not out loud. My grandmother used to say that the devil was riding me when it happened because I was being bad or disrespectful. That freaked me out.

This has happened to me a couple of times and it is one of the scariest things that can happen to you. Believe it or not, some say that this moment is the highest point of human consciousness - the ability to watch yourself sleep.

Holy sh*t I have absolutely NO idea what you folks are talking about and I’m glad I don’t. That sh*t sounds friggin’ scary!

My ex-hubby used to get what we called “trapped” in his sleep. I used to think he was faking, but now maybe he wasn’t.

Thank goodness it wasn’t the reason we divorced! LOL sorry I don’t mean to laugh although I laughed at him all the time.

It’s happened to me in adulthood. It freaked me out a little. I was half sleep, but could actually see myself struggling to wake up. I couldn’t move. Other than sleep paralysis or “witch(devil) on your back” like Melette said earlier, that’s how my mom dismissed it.

That stuff sounds scary as hell… umm… ya’ll bout to give me nightmares… booooo to all of you! lol
