Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!

Dec 14

The Chia Pet. Who buys this shit? And better yet, is this how you really think of your loved ones, by purchasing a Chia Pet for them for Christmas? Apparently someone is keeping the company who makes these afloat, because it has been around since the early 80′s and there’s a commercial on television every year at Christmastime.

I happened to see one of the commercials this morning and no longer are they specializing in the animal figurines that grow herbal plants, but now they’ve added Shrek, Homer Simpson, Scooby Doo and Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, Tweety, etc.

Who in their right mind wants to see an herbal afro growing on Tweety? Shaggy, yes, but Tweety? Blasphemy! Is the Chia Pet supposed to get kids interested in botany? What is it’s purpose? Whatever happened to watching seeds grow in a styrofoam cup? That’s how we did it in grade school.

  1. LMTO! Girl, I don’t know when the last time I saw a chia pet. I am not sure who would buy that. Who came up with it? Why is it still on the market? Why buy a chia pet when you can just go and buy a real flower. I never saw the point in those things. It is such a waste of money. There is nothing fascinating about them. This goes to show you, that we can almost think of anything to make money right?

    HAPPY FRIDAY!
Drop by my spot today and weigh in, I would love to hear your thoughts.

    Great Post!

  2. LMAO! I see those commercials all the time now as well. I think I had one in grade school but that would be the worse present in 2007. Although I have to admit I thought about getting the chia herbal garden because I’ve tried growing basil etc in my house and it never really works out. Luckily it’s in a little pot and not on shrek’s head.

  3. I didn’t even know they made those joints any more. I would be pissed if I got one.

  4. i’ve always thought about buying one just for the box and then sticking the real gift in the box :)

  5. Like on facebook, I have to go ahead and “OH SNAP” you….hahahaha!!

This is too funny. I remember back in Kindergarten & Grade 1 in prep school in Jamaica. We used to have those red beans that always smelt really horrible after a few days in the glass jar with water and i think it was cotton. I forget exactly, but anyone can tell you about getting your green thumb on really early in life. That is staple in just about every good curriculum. *sigh* I miss my early youth now.

  6. i never understood how they blew up in the first place. i despise a chia pet, sincerely, i do.

  7. LOL! This brings back memories. The running joke at my house, “It’s getting close to Christmas. You better not mess with me. Fool around and get a Chia Pet.” Though I can’t imagine following through with the threat. LOLOL.

  8. I always wanted the herbal garden one…Every plant I ever tried to grow died…who knows…I’d probably kill the Chia Pet too….

  9. LOL! One year my brother really wanted to buy our mother one for Christmas! I’m a few years older than he is, so I was there to talk him out of it, but if it had been left up to him, our mom definitely would’ve been the proud owner of a Chia Pet! I think they’re one of those things that kids see decide they’re going to get for their parents. That’s my hope anyway. Do adults buy these things???

  10. They have them at Target. I was going to buy my sister one as a joke for Christmas but you’ve convinced me otherwise. Thanks for talking me out of it. That was a close one. :)

  11. i’m with aquababie. i’ve always wanted to do stick a real present in a chia pet box, but i keep forgetting each year. i’ve never seen an afro tweety before. i would clown somebody so hard if they actually had one!!! (even though when i was like, 6, i thought they were cool.)

  12. I don’t know who buys it…but I wish I invented it…them cats show cards look nice.

  13. Haven’t heard or seen them in years…you mean to tell me they are back. New to your website and blog. It’s nice here…love the pics in your gallery…extremely talented eye. Going to read more. Have a great day.

  14. yea i’ve seen those ads. cant believe those guys are still around. i need me a chia pet and some sea monkeys lol

  15. ummm… I am probably a dork for thinking the herbal garden ones were a good idea… lol Not for me of course… I can’t cook so there would be no purpose in having an ugly scooby doo clay head with a green afro growing from it on my kitchen counter… BUT… if I cooked and wanted fresh herbs, I might have bought one.

I bet if you went out in the midwest, you might find whole chia gardens or something… lol
