MLK Mix By Nikki 15 January 2008 at 8:55 am and have

I know that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday is today, but this must ssssssssstop! Why would you mix a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speech with an R&B song?

So far today I’ve heard the I Have A Dream speech mixed with Tender Love by the Force MD’s and also mixed with Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now by McFadden and Whitehead.

And I’m sure there are some other mixes floating around out there, but why? What’s next?

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of a Sensual Seduction (duction, duction)…..

Dang Nikki!!! I’m loving the graphic…I wish I could get someone to design one for me!

But I agree with you…They used to do that for the whole day in NY when I was younger…DJ Red Alert and DJ Darryl James were famous for that! LOL

Happy Martin Luther The King Day to ya!

I guess that is a true commentary of how far we’ve come (or in this case gone). Black folks wonder why it is hard for some whites to take us seriously…well this is a clue… You will never hear a JFK speech underscored to Aerosmith.

Man oh man do I feel you on this one Nikki!

I’m not proposing that Dr. King’s speeches be held sacred, but damn! can’t we allow any part of our heritage to maintain its value without diminishing it unnecessarily while at the same time lying to ourselves that we are making it “more mainstream and accessible to the masses”?

Valuable artifacts maintain their value because they are preserved and protected from just this type of “change”. That is why the Smithsonian remains a profitable business. When will we as a people learn this?

Between activities of this nature and the sheer overabundance of so-called “urban literature” that appears to be taking over bookstores everywhere in lieu of (verses in addition to) the wide variety of literary works that used to be available to provide diverse slices of what African-American life truly looks like, we will soon have to designate members of our races such as Nikki Giovanni, and Nikki of The Infinite Ink to become the ancient griots of old that could be found in the Motherland or we will soon have no true record of our own GREATNESS!
