When You Least Expect It
2008
A couple of years ago, I used to blog quite often about an elderly lady in her 80’s who attends church with my mother. Her name is Emma, but everyone calls her Miss Emma. My friend Dre and I would do odd jobs for her to help her out. Like I would wash her laundry or clean her home and Dre would mow her lawn for her.
Miss Emma has been ill the past year (striken with Parkinson’s disease), and some of her distant relatives have threatened to put her in a nursing home, but for now, Miss Emma still lives on her own, and she’s been dating one of her neighbors, who is also in his 80’s.
Well, on last night, my mother attended Bible Study at her church and Miss Emma was in attendance. She’d asked my mother about me because she’d heard that I’d been sick the past couple of weeks. Mom told her that I was at home recovering from surgery.
Unbeknownst to my mother and I, this morning, Miss Emma got up and made some cinnamon rolls to help cheer me up. Now if you can recall in my previous posts regarding Miss Emma, she can really burn! She can cook like nobody’s business, and Dre and I would always look forward to her cinnamon rolls.
Anyway, my mother got a phone call about 30 minutes or so ago from Miss Emma saying, “I’ve got something special for Nikki. Can you swing by my house and pick it up?” Mom just returned from Miss Emma’s home with the cinnamon rolls for me. And here I was feeling kinda down about being ill, when Miss Emma, who’s sicker than I am, was thinking of me. This made my day.
Oh, and if you wanna take a peek at them, here ya go. *does taunting chant* Na-na-na-na-na, you can’t have none!
