In the Heat of the Night

May 28

I woke up around 4am this morning by the strangest sound I’d ever heard in my life.  What I thought had happened was that someone had left a crying baby on my doorstep.

As I listened from my bedroom window, the cries got eerier and were getting louder.  Afraid that the baby may be harmed, I put on my robe and slippers, grabbed my gun (hey, I didn’t know who the hell was out there at that time of the morning), and walked outside to find out where the wailing was coming from.

Turns out it was not a baby, but a stray cat in heat.  Good Lord, that cat sounded like a baby crying.  After shooing the cat away, I could not get back to sleep because I kept hearing that mournful wail in my head.

  1. Poor cat. I want to cry some times myself.

  2. I remember the first time I heard this sound, it really scared me. It was loud and painful. I had just had my 1st child and it was our 1st night at home. I cried b/c I really thought a cat was being killed by some larger animal. That was 7 years ago. I heard this sound again a few months back and it chilled me to the bone. I am soooooo glad that it was probably just heat.

  3. I’ll bet that was disconcerting.

  4. It’s heartbreaking to hear a cat in heat, drives me up the friggin’ wall. I had a male cat once that went nuts when the cat next door was doing that. He damn near tore up my apartment trying to get at her LOL! Hey Nikki, one more week until True Blood. I can’t wait!

  5. Uhhh…Meow?? =)

  6. That’s normal, and keep your behind in the house! Some intruders use the wailing cat as an “instrument” to get you out of your house, because they know it sounds like a child than a cat.

Back in the day, we had a bunch of stray cats in our neighborhood. My mother and I got bored one night and started mimmicking them. Never seen a cat jump that high and paw at our bedroom windows. Ahhh fun times.
