Noah’s Arc

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m a fan of Noah’s Arc and I don’t even know how it happened. I watched one show and didn’t think much of it. Then I watched another and realized that the storylines were pretty interesting.

The acting is rather cheesy at times, but the chemistry between the characters is amazing. A friend of mine was raving about season 1, so I bought the dvd collection. And recently, I just wrapped up watching season two. Yeah, I know I’m late as hell, but my cable provider doesn’t get the LOGO network, so I ended up watching it on YouTube.

Brief synopsis in case you haven’t seen the show:

Noah Nicholson is a struggling screenwriter embarking on a new love affair with newly out and much more successful screenwriter, Wade, while his friends, Alex Kirby, a HIV/AIDS counselor who is the matriarch of the group and struggling to keep his seven-year relationship with his anesthesiologist boyfriend Trey in tact; Ricky Davis, the owner of a trendy clothing store and is the playboy of the group; and Chance Counter, a recently married college professor who is skeptical about moving into a new home with his partner Eddie and his three year old daughter.

I love the storylines, because you can relate to them regardless of your sexual orientation. I found myself rooting for Noah to get back with Wade, for Alex to expose Guy for the creep he is, for Ricky to find true love and for Chance to be more of a “take charge” kinda guy.

The one thing I’ve learned from watching the series is that people are just people, and that’s all you can ask for.

Nikki’s Top 5 Romantic Movies

It’s a chilly, yet beautiful day in my city. I know tonight would be perfect for putting a few logs into the fireplace and snuggling up with the one I love. And I started thinking about my favorite romantic films that I would watch on those nights. They are as follows…..

1. Love Jones - How could you not love this film? In case you’ve been living in a convent for the past 9 years and never got a chance to watch the film, it’s the story of a poet/writer (Darius Lovehall played by Larenz Tate) who falls in love with a photographer (Nina played by Nia Long), who isn’t quite sure she’s over her ex, let alone what she wants out of life, even though she’s feeling the hell outta the poet. This film was the rebirth of cool.

2. City of Angels - The film stars Nicholas Cage as an angel named Seth who falls in love with Dr. Maggie Ross, played by Meg Ryan. Seth is so infatuated with Maggie that he experiences an internal struggle and has to decide whether or not to become mortal and spend the rest of his life with this woman.

3. Monsoon Wedding - The film revolves around an arranged traditional Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India. You have Aditi, the bride, who has been having an affair with her married boss, but must now marry a groom whom she has never met and leave India to move to Houston, TX, which is where the groom now lives. Then there’s P.K. Dubey, the wedding contractor, who falls for Aditi’s family maid. And also there’s Ria, Aditi’s cousin who was raised by her family, who’s longing for love, but hides a secret that rocks the family to the core.

4. Ghost - It’s the story of investment banker Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and his longtime girlfriend and artist, Molly Jensen (Demi Moore). After a night out at the theater, Sam is murdered during a robbery gone awry. Refusing to transition over to the afterlife, for fear that the thief may come after Molly, Sam is determined to find out who murdered him and why, with a little help from a hack psychic named Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), who actually turns out to have real psychic abilities, unbeknownst to her.

5. Somewhere In Time - Christopher Reeve plays Richard Collier, a Chicago playwright, who after a successful run of his play, is visited backstage by an elderly woman (Jane Seymour) who gives him an engraved watch. She says to Richard, “Return to me,” then she leaves. During his vactation stay at a hotel, Richard sees a photograph of a beautiful young woman and becomes intrigued. He realizes that the photograph is of the elderly woman who visited him backstage. Richard feels that he and she were lovers in a past lifetime and becomes determined to find out about time travel in order to return to her.

If I had a Top 10 list, I would definitely include The Notebook. That movie was one helluva tearjerker. But for now, these are my Top 5. What are yours?

I Wanna Be Made

Have you ever seen the MTV reality series, Made? The series follows teens who wish to be made into singers, dancers, athletes, models, etc. MTV sets them up with a Made Coach, usually an expert or celebrity in the field in which the teen wants to be made.

And when I was a youth, I wanted to be a dancer. So if I were approached by the Made staff at MTV, I would have wished to be made into an Alvin Ailey dancer. I took dance classes from ages 6-19. I was fascinated with Judith Jamison (a Soror I might add) and longed to be under her tutelage at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

So I pose this question to you……………..If given the opportunity, what would you like to be made as?

House of Carters

I promised myself that I wouldn’t get roped into watching another reality show. Well, that only lasted a minute. I’ve been watching House of Carters on the E! network, and man I tell you, this family is dysfunctional like a mofo!

If you haven’t seen the show, here’s a brief synopsis:

Backstreet Boy Nick Carter tries to reunite his family by living together in one house with his four younger siblings, including pop star Aaron Carter, for the first time in years. After years of separation and plenty of family trouble (including their parents’ acrimonious divorce, Nick’s arrest for DUI, and Aaron’s lawsuit against his own mother), the five Carter kids try to reconnect as a family while pursuing their own separate career and life goals.

Now, let’s meet the Carters as I see them, shall we?

1. Nick: He’s a former Backstreet Boy, who’s just trying to keep his family from cracking up. He buys a house for he and his 4 siblings to move into as he and his younger brother try to start their own record label. He’s the disciplinarian of the family, which ain’t no easy task. He’s the oldest of the siblings.

2. Bobbie Jean aka BJ: She’s an aspiring chef, who like Nick, wants some order to the family. She’s the second oldest and is usually the mediator of fights between Leslie and Angel.

3. Leslie: She’s still trying to find herself for the mostpart. She longs to be a rock singer. She gets terrorized by her younger sister Angel and goes through bouts of depression from time to time. She used to be an obese child and still feels like she’s suffering from the taunting and teasing, even though she’s no longer obese.

4. Angel: She’s the youngest daughter. I can’t count how many different guys she’s dating each week. She loves teasing Leslie just for the hell of it. She thinks she’s untouchable.

5. Aaron: He is a piece of work. He’s the youngest of the bunch and thinks he can do whatever he please. He drinks, he smokes, he has the worst acne, and is forever trying to show off his no-pack. He’s so rail thin, he could hula hoop through a Cheerio. Once a former teeny bop star, he trying to move on to the next phase of his life. Whatever that is. One minute he’s trying to be a hardcore rapper, the next it’s R&B. I look for him to be the next K-Fed in the years to come (and you know he ain’t shit). Aaron fights with Nick at every turn. Nick just wants to steer him in the right direction, but Aaron feels that Nick is trying to run his life.

After watching this show, you will come to the realization that no matter how bad you think your life is, it really isn’t that fucked up. Because the Carters, regardless of the money that they have, are in need of some serious therapy sessions.
